I am Hong Seok-Kyeong, Chair of the Department of Communication, Seoul National University.
During the past few decades, our society has gone through an extraordinarily rapid economic growth and societal change. Under such circumstances, communication has been addressed as an increasingly important issue. Amid the exacerbation of conflict between generations, regions, and classes nowadays, lack of conversation and communication is the root of all social problems. Communication Studies not only examines the communication between individuals or groups, but also explores production, distribution, proliferation of information and content through various mediums, and its resulting personal, social, political, and cultural changes both at home and abroad. This wide range of examination potentially contributes to an accurate diagnosis and finding of solution for all kinds of societal problems that we are facing today. Also, the change in communication patterns due to expeditiously developing media environment and technologies bring about unprecedented challenges and opportunities for those who want to learn and research Communication Studies.
The Department of Communication has celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2015. Our Department will do its best in nurturing well-balanced and cultured elites with high morality, as well as fulfilling its original mission of educating Communication professionals who firmly ground their basis of knowledge on both theoretical and practical backgrounds.
