Communication is an indispensable part of human life and a fundamental mechanism that creates, sustains, and develops a society. Every individual’s life, group, and organization operate in various dimensions of interaction. The interaction that follows within these dimensions is also in the scope of communication. From daily interactions to communal lifestyle, and even to the level of society as a whole, there isn’t a single social phenomenon that does not have an association with communication.

What about media as an institutional entity that mediates societal communication, such as newspapers, television broadcasting, Internet, smartphone, and social media?
Media is a form of network that immediately detects and delivers important social issues in all aspects of society. At the same time, media is the finest form of public sphere where debates on social issues take place, an agenda setter which decides discussion topics, a debate moderator, and a speaker.

Furthermore, modern journalism has played a crucial role in establishing the modern society. Broadcasting, especially television, is a necessity to understand modern politics, economics, society, and cultural phenomena.

Along with the recent development in digital network technologies that connect individuals, the entire society has been experiencing fundamental transformation in its communication processes. In turn, this phenomenon has been placing more importance on communication and media, and is becoming one of the most substantial areas of scholarly research and education in the present day.

In practice, communication research and education is the most dynamic and fast growing field in social sciences. Grounded in the theoretical and practical knowledge concerning the fast growing communication and media phenomena, the Department of Communication at Seoul National University aims at training students to become professionals who will lead various communication practices as well as the rapidly changing media landscape at the peak of this historical progression.
